Fundraising

Oya No Kai, Inc. is classified as a 501(c)(3) tax-deductible charitable organization. This allows donors and participants in our fundraising activities to receive tax benefits to the extent allowed by law from financial participation. Oya No Kai, Inc. has two purposes for its fundraising. One is for general support of the entire K-12 program, including interns. The other reason is to support the Japanese Cultural Exchanges and to make them affordable to all the JMP families.

Oya No Kai is an approved Arts organization for purposes of a tax credit when you also donate to the Oregon Cultural Trust. Its goal is to create a protected endowment of over $200 million to provide long-term support for culture in Oregon. When you make a donation to the OCT, you may claim a dollar-for-dollar tax credit on your income tax return (consult your tax preparer for details).

Japanese Cookbook for Intern Fund

As a way to raise money for the Intern Fund, Emi Avondstandt (of Richmond Rich Coffee fame) is organizing a cookbook fundraiser. A host mother myself, one of my favorite parts of the hosting experience is the opportunity to learn about Japanese cooking and to share the wide culinary background of American cuisine.

We would like to compile a cookbook for the JMP that has contributions from both American as well as Japanese recipes. (And by “American” I think we mean anything you prepare to eat in your home!) If you have a favorite family meal - whether you have hosted an intern or not - please submit as many recipes as you like to Emi via email at emiandlaur ( at ) msn ( dot ) com.

Or you may write out your recipe and submit it to a box that will be located in the Richmond office beginning Monday, February 22. Please include:

  1. Dish name
  2. Amount
  3. Ingredients
  4. How to make it
  5. Comments
  6. Pictures, photos or illustrations (your child's illustration would be an excellent way to include the whole family)

Once completed, this cookbook will be available for purchase as a fundraiser for the Intern Fund. It will also be a great resource for families that are hosting interns or families that invite interns for dinner.

Thank you!

Melissa Gorgon Clark Host Family Coordinator

Scrip

This is a JMP-wide fundraiser, supported and organized by Oya No Kai. Scrip has long been a favorite school fundraiser; no selling to family and friends, no buying things you wouldn't normally buy - it's like free money for your class! Merchants sell gift certificates or gift cards to us at a discount, families pay face value, and 90% of the proceeds go into your child's class account for the 5th or 8th grade cultural exchange to Japan. (You can also choose to direct the proceeds to the ONK General Fund, Pre-K, Richmond or Mt. Tabor PTA, or Richmond Foundation). The remaining 10% goes into the Oya No Kai general fund, which supports the entire JMP program and offsets the Scrip operating costs. (read more)

Gift Wrap

The gift wrap fundraiser occurs in October. For the 2008-2009 school year $11,000 was raised. The proceeds went to the intern fund. Please contact Cathy Zaerr. (read more)

T-Shirts

Our annual sale takes place in the fall. Although some money is made on the sale of the t-shirts, the priority is to make the t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats and bags available to the entire JMP community, friends and supporters. T-shirt designs are generously donated by graphic artist Connie Cho. For more information, contact Kari Shawen or Jackie Ravarra. (read more)

Chinook Books

In support of the 8th grade Research Residency trip Chinooks Books are sold by Mt. Tabor Middle School families. The Chinook Book sale is generally held in October. (read more)

Organizations

Oya No Kai, Inc. partipates with various local and online retailers and organizations who donate a percentage of sales back to our organization. It can be as simple as a trip to the grocery store or as complex as your Christmas shopping -- and Oya No Kai gets some assistance, too. (read more)
