WHAT IS SCRIP?
Scrip is a term that means “substitute money”. For us, Scrip is a fundraising program that can raise thousands of dollars. Scrip is gift cards & gift certificates that can be used just like cash at participating businesses. Scrip is available for many national and local merchants. We buy Scrip from the merchants at a discount, and sell it to you at face value. The proceeds go to support the Japanese Immersion Program’s cultural exchanges. Scrip is an easy fundraiser, as you only buy the things you would buy normally – groceries, clothes, books, movie tickets, etc. Major grocery stores, fast-food & other restaurants, retail stores, movie theaters, and bookstores participate.
WHICH MERCHANTS PARTICIPATE?
For the latest and complete list of participating merchants, go to our separate Merchants List.
HOW WILL MY PURCHASE OF SCRIP BENEFIT MY CHILD?
As of fall 2014, Scrip profits will go into one consolidated fund dedicated to the Cultural Exchange Program (minus 10% for service and materials fees). All individual class accounts will retain their current balance but moving forward, any new scrip profits will be put into a larger Scrip Fund. In the spring, this fund will be divided between the three outgoing cultural exchanges at 5th, 8th, and high school and equally per participating student. This new system will help streamline Oya No Kai’s accounting. It also reinforces our belief that we are one community and we should work together to support one another.
HOW MUCH MONEY IS RAISED THROUGH SCRIP?
Japanese Immersion Program families, teachers, & staff raise an average of $18,000 annually through Scrip! 10% of all Scrip proceeds go to the Oya No Kai general fund and the remaining 90% goes into the class trip funds. If each grade level had just 30 families ordering each month, with an average of $200 in grocery scrip for each family, that class would earn about $2,700 this school year. Of course, most families can spend more than that at the grocery store, and there are plenty of other merchants available as well. More families participating = more money raised to cut down on the costs of these trips.
HOW DOES ORDERING IN-PERSON WORK?
Simply place your order form and payment in an envelope and give it to a Scrip team member on the order day. Scrip team members can be found in the Richmond cafeteria or place it in the Scrip mailbox at Richmond, Room 110, no later than 8:15 am. Mt. Tabor orders are due in the office no later than 9:15 am. You can pay for your order with cash, check, or credit card with checks made out to “Oya No Kai-Scrip”. Orders can also be phoned-in, emailed, or mailed, but they must be received by the evening before the order date.
WHEN ARE THE ORDER DATES?
Scrip order dates can be found on the Order Dates page. Order forms and envelopes are available in the Oya No Kai box at Richmond, as well as in the office at Mt. Tabor. Grant families can contact the Scrip Coordinators directly at email@example.com.
WHEN WILL I GET MY SCRIP?
Orders are filled and ready for pickup on Fridays between 2:00 – 2:30 in the Richmond cafeteria. Mt. Tabor orders can be picked up in the Mt. Tabor office on Fridays by 3:00. If you can’t get to school to pick up your order, you can arrange to have your order picked up by a Team Captain who lives near you (you can pick up your order from them at your convenience). Please indicate where you live so we can assign you the appropriate Team Captain.
CAN I HAVE A STANDING ORDER?
Definitely! We offer you the option to establish a standing monthly Scrip order. Once you are signed up, we collect a check from you or you can set up automatic bill pay through your bank. Once a month on Standing Order days, you will automatically have your regular order filled. Simply complete the order form (minimum purchase of $200), indicating that you would like to set up a Standing Order, and return to the Scrip box in Room 110 at Richmond or in the office at Mt. Tabor. Standing Orders continue each month (except July/August) until you request a change or cancellation. If you decide to set up a monthly check, please contact the Scrip Coordinator at firstname.lastname@example.org.
