Camp Westwind – Departure Planning

Planning Packing Directions Cabins  – Meals Activities

westwind_ferryPlanning your Portland departure time:

We know that parents have many commitments and obligations during the week, so it is important that you NOT wait to the last minute to think about your Westwind weekend travel plans. Westwind weekends begin on FRIDAY, although this is not a holiday for PPS, or most employers. Our arrival time at the camp is different every year because it is based on the tides. We will cross the Salmon River by boat to enter the camp, and we must do this during high tide. This means your family will need to be on the road well before school and most offices have completed their standard day.  Some parents pick up kids early from school, and others just keep them out of school for the day. It’s up to you. If you work, you will have to decide whether to take off the entire day, plan to leave early, or if you will need to arrive late (see below).

There is normally a TWO HOUR driving time from Portland to the boat ramp departure point on the Salmon River, but on Friday afternoons, it can take longer.

Barge crossing times are posted below.   Please note the expected time on Friday that you should plan to be packed up, have all your passengers, and be on the road!!

There will occasionally be some who cannot get out of work early enough to catch the Friday barge. You can arrive later on Friday or Saturday, park at the road entrance to the camp, and hike or bike in about two miles to the camp. It is a good idea to send your baggage earlier with folks taking the barge so you don’t need to carry your baggage that distance.  Please let us know if you plan to arrive late on Friday or Saturday, so we can get you parking directions and gate codes, and so we know when to be expecting you.

    • Unfortunately, the loading dock is closed for repairs on the June 2-4 weekend, so Westwind cannot bring our group into camp by boat.  We will need to park all of our cars at the Beaver Pond entrance to the camp (Frasier Road).  (The directions to this entrance are posted in the Driving Directions tab, Westwind section of the Oya No Kai website. PLEASE LOOK AT THIS, and print a copy to bring with you in your vehicle!)  We will then hike into camp, after loading the baggage truck.  You will want to wear comfortable walking shoes for the pleasant, level, two mile hike into camp.  We will use the same procedure in reverse for the departure on Sunday.

    • Expected return to Portland around 3:30 pm
